This season's conferences

August 21, 2006 :: by Lee 0 responses

WikiSym and Hypertext

The irrepressible Riccardo is soon to leave for Denmark for Hypertext 2006. Due to project pressures, he has kindly forfeited attendance at WikiSym, which takes place today and tomorrow and looks great (Doug Engelbart, EEK, Mark Bernstein and some interesting panel discussions about the future of wikis). But at Hypertext, Riccardo will run a workshop with Headshift Alumnus Dan Dixon about process and structure in Hypertext - see the wiki here - which will also be great, so make sure you get along if you are there.

(Incidentally, the last conference presentation Riccardo and I did together was a straight-to-video number for the Italian Frontiers of Interaction conference - available only on YouTube, partly in English and partly in Italian. and yes the tired eyes and stubble are indicative of what a pain it was to produce ;-)

Social Network Tools

I will be speaking at a Unicom event in London on September 20-21 called Social Network Tools and their Business Application: Blogs, Podcasting, Instant Messaging, RSS and Wikis, along with my friends and compadres Euan, Hugh, Lloyd and Stowe. It is chaired by David Gurteen, who has a wealth of experience in knowledge sharing. All in all, it looks like a worthwhile event, so get on over to the registration page and then we can maybe catch up and have a chat on the day if you are interested in these sorts of thing.

European Corporate Blogging Summit 2006

Ruth Ward from Allen & Overy and I will reprise our double act about A&O's pioneering social knowledge sharing case study at this event on September 25. The fantastic JP Rangaswami is also on the programme, plus some useful practical sessions on various aspects of corporate blogging.

Microsoft/TDA Creativity Futures Forum

The Training and Development Agency for Schools is co-hosting an event at Microsoft's Reading campus on September 27, which is intended to help think through how we can help teachers become confident in using new ICT systems, tools and techniques. I have been invited to inject a 'new social tools' perspective as a counterpoint traditional centralised IT approaches that are still in evidence. In the era of blogs, MySpace and wikipedia, the way we teach/facilitate/support IT in schools is a tremendously important issue. Right now, teachers and ICT support staff have their fingers in the dyke, but a wave is looming that threatens the whole setup of ICT teaching in education, and using current thinking alone, they will be powerless to stop it. Should be a robust debate...

Shift

Shift takes place on September 28-29 in Lisbon, focusing on emerging technologies. It is highly recommended, and well worth a trip to a wonderful city at the end of the summer. I can't make it for scheduling reasons, but the lineup is good and the conference seems to be well organised.

BlogTalk

Blogtalk is back in Vienna, on October 2-3, with a great programme including Riccardo, Suw, Anne, Ton and Elmine and lots more. I will be speaking about real-life experience using social software to improve collaboration among lawyers.

Knowledge and Content Europe

Formerly KM Europe, this is a major annual event bringing together thinkers and practitioners in the knowledge sharing space. It takes place in Amsterdam on November 14-15. We will be speaking about ambient knowledge sharing using social tools, and the rest of the draft programme looks excellent. More details to follow from Ark Group.
