Les Blogs presentations and a word on hype

Note to future conference organisers: this is how to gather together coverage and links to presentations afterwards: LoicLeMeur Wiki - LesBlogsCoverage. Also, an honest list of things to be improved for the next conference is a nice touch too. This was a great example of emergent organisation, as David Tebbutt points out in his Guardian article extolling the (manifold) virtues of Socialtext as a wiki platform for event organising. Notwithstanding the emergent nature of the event, Loic and other contributors deserve our thanks for all their hard work.

Also on the wiki is a useful collection of links from the conference, including a French transcription of my talk about how to go about implementing social software projects: Comment construire un réseau social? (thanks Francois!).

Stalking the floor of the Senate that day was Stowe Boyd, putting together a True Voice show about what he sees as the emergence of a blogging anti-hype trend. Hear the show here (mp3) - it features me and several other people who were at Les Blogs. My contribution, for what it's worth, was that both the hype and the anti-hype are unhelpful distractions from the task of making this technology real for people and organisations. I have a slight go at blogging evangelists in the show who talk about companies that get it ("cool") and who don't get it ("they will die"). This is silly talk and reminds me of the dot.com boom. Fellow panelist at Les Blogs, Euan Semple, also gets upset about this silliness.

A useful antidote, and a fitting way to end the conference, was Doc Searls inspirational talk about what blogs are and what they are not. Doc is often amazing, and this time he reminded us that blogs are about writing and connecting with people, not "delivering content" and "reaching eyeballs":

"We're still beginning. The Cluetrain has hardly left the station."
