Hands up who installs an LMS at home to learn something new?

Exactly!

Sebastian nails one of the key issues in the fruitless debate about the value of over-structured so-called Learning Management Systems:

The majority of people who leave our institutionalised, formal educational environments will never ever (or only very occassionally) get back to this wonderfully prepared, well designed, externally paced and controlled format to advance their competencies, to broaden their horizons, and to engage in a bit of self-cultivation (German: Selbstbildung), if you like.
I yet have to hear a story about a young professional who felt the terrible need to install and run his own LMS platfrom to support his or her personal change project. But I know loads who use an array of small, simple and (increasingly networked) personal tools to their advantage.
