The opportunity to stand on a plinth in Trafalgar Square in London has previously been reserved for military and valedictory gentleman such as Charles Napier, King Edward IV and Major General Sir Henry Havelock.
Antony Gormley, the man behind Britain's best-loved sculpture The Angel of the North, has launched an idea to bring everyday people across the UK into this monumental position.
Antony Gormley is inviting the people of the UK to occupy the empty Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square. Beginning on the 6th of July, every hour, 24 hours a day, for 100 days without a break a different person will take part in a living monument.
One and Other is part of the 2009 Sky Arts Artichoke Season and supported by an innovative, social website designed by Headshift.
In reaching out to as many people as possible to create a truly nationwide call to action, the website forms a crucial part of the project. Through social tools and live streaming of the event the project will give people ownership and involvement both at a regional level and a sense of identity at a National level.
Applications for a place on the plinth will open in April 2009 with the first places allocated at the end of May. Register your interest to receive regular updates on the project.
