  • Jon's background is in enterprise collaboration which he first started at IBM using collaboration tools internally as well as selling web based platforms.

Jon worked on some of the first "Web 1.0" transactional platforms such as Cahoot, one of the UK's first online banks, but soon realised the potential the web held for collaboration when he started helping the Scouts with their Portal in 2001. He has been involved in Enterprise software focusing on collaboration projects ever since.

Before joining Headshift he ran sales and marketing for a web analytics start-up, and previously managed a team of enterprise software consultants delivering solutions based on IBM, Oracle and Business Objects software at a solutions integrator.

He blogs at jonmell.co.uk, and whilst not thinking about social software, coaches basketball.

After a few drinks he sometimes claims there is a link between the individual/group dynamic in basketball and the workplace, although few believe him.

Jon holds a degree in Philosophy and lives in St Albans.

  • Commented on Socialtext Signals
Hey Lee - it depends what you mean by "plug in". There is a widget on the Dashboard that can pull in your Outlook mail, and you can email content directly into the wiki from Outlook (or any other email...
  • Posted Socialtext Signals to Blog
Since I last blogged about Socialtext Desktop and Signals, the guys have done a lot of work on the new features. So much so, they have released an appliance with just the Desktop, Signals and Profiles features - the Socialtext...
  • Posted Business 2.0 to Blog
As organisations become more transparent, more open, more prepared to share we are seeing more and more intellectual capital being given away "free". There is the over-quoted example of Goldmine giving away its geological data, Sun Microsystems and IBM giving...
  • Posted Openness, transparency and MP's expenses... to Blog
The recent MPs expenses saga has shown an interesting case study in common sense vs business processes. When judged by whether or not their expense claims were against the rules or not, hardly any MPs have been found to have...
  • Commented on Lotus Connections 2.5 - coming soon
HI David - thanks for your comment - we're just setting up the 2.5 beta at Headshift so looking forward to digging into more detail!...
  • Commented on How to find the people you need
Jason - by the way, that scenario you mention is exactly the sort of use case profiles support. The international aspect is also interesting, especially if you use profiles to work out who can speak what language!...
  • Commented on How to find the people you need
Hi Jason - this is all possible. My blog post wasn't supposed to be talking about a specific system (although I used Jive as an example) but rather the principles behind using profiles. This could be done in several ways:...
  • Commented on How to find the people you need
Hi Jason - thanks for the comment. We tend to find that the more information can be seeded, the greater the uptake. This is not just true for profiles, but also blogs, discussion forums, documents etc....
  • Posted How to find the people you need to Blog
Rich profiles can be a powerful cornerstone of an Enterprise 2.0 / next generation intranet / social business software solution. Finding people rather than documents can be highly beneficial in terms of productivity, using information rather than looking for it,...
  • Posted Sharepoint as an Enterprise 2.0 platform to Blog
After my recent posts on Jive, Socialtext and Connections, some people have been asking me where I see Sharepoint fitting in. I was planning a long post on it, but having read Thomas Vander Wal's recent post I have nothing...
  • Commented on Lotus Connections 2.5 - coming soon
Thanks Luis - let us know what it's like to use it once it's rolled out!...
  • Posted Lotus Connections 2.5 - coming soon to Blog
As mentioned in my previous post, Lotus Connections is due to receive a significant upgrade in the Summer. It addresses many of the serious functional gaps that have been present up until now (such as lack of wiki functionality) as...
  • Posted New features of Socialtext - Signals and Desktop to Blog
Socialtext have released Socialtext Signals, as well as Socialtext Desktop which I took a look at today. The easiest way to explain Signals is "Twitter for the Enterprise" but Socialtext have added a few features that give it extra...

  • Posted Reduce management costs with Enterprise 2.0 to Blog
I was with a customer the other day who very succinctly described their business motivation for delivering an Enterprise 2.0 intranet. "We're looking to expand, but without increasing management costs".Employees who are efficiently networked don't need management making sure that...
  • Posted Integrate Lotus Connections and Confluence to Blog
Despite Lotus Connections being a great option for organisations looking to deploy a social software platform, it does not include any wiki functionality. This is going to be remedied in a Summer release, but for organisations looking to get started...
  • Posted Jive, Lotus Connections and Socialtext to Blog
Until recently, organisations who wanted to implement social software or "Enterprise 2.0" faced the task of integrating various best of breed components. You might take a wiki, a blog, an enterprise RSS server, and glue them all together. This is...
  • Posted Can you find the people you need? to Blog
One of the more common use cases of Enterprise 2.0 is finding expertise within a large organisation. At Lotusphere last year, a representative from the recently merged Bank of New York / Mellon Financial explained the problem (I'm paraphrasing slightly,...
  • Posted Social software ROI to Blog
A few weeks ago I was in Zurich presenting at Somesso. Part of my talk was around ROI where I had the opportunity to speak about why ROI is so difficult for social software.First, it's always worth checking whether or not...
  • Commented on Why bother with social software?
Thanks Salv - that's a great comment. Larry Hawes blogged recently about how organisations that don't value collaboration will never be swayed by a business case, and those that do won't need one (http://lehawes.wordpress.com/2008/10/20/culture-trumps-roi/) When I talk about "Social Networking"...
  • Posted Why bother with social software? to Blog
Does social software really add value?  Does an Enterprise 2.0 ROI actually exist?  How would you measure it?  Is it just for time wasters (like email, the internet, instant messaging etc.).  During a credit crunch surely employees could be performing...
  • Posted Cost of social software to Blog
One of the strongest arguments around adopting social software is that you can do so easily and at very low cost when compared with 'traditional' IT solutions. Given today's economic volatility and frozen IT budgets it may make sense to...
