BBC Bubbles is a place for kids to store and share their favourite stuff online - links, blogs, photos, videos, MP3s - and find other things they like. The interface was built by Headshift in collaboration with the BBC as part of their Online Prototypes initiative.
Innovating for the web-natives
Building online tools for children is in many ways very rewarding. They are native users of the Internet, they aren't afraid of clicking and exploring and will adopt the best solutions and make them part of their everyday exploration of the world.
BBC Bubbles gave us an opportunity to take social tools and really explore what they can do for a generation who haven't really experienced a world without them.
Earning "Kudos Points"
Within BBC Bubbles the kids can tag items with keywords making them more 'findable' and enabling linking to members with similar interests. They can also earn 'kudos points' for popular items, and become an expert on a particular topic, while customising the appearance and content of their personal page.
BBC Bubbles puts the social into 'social bookmarking' by providing an easy, fun and powerful service to its users - a constantly-updating and shared picture of what's "cool".
Exploring within a safe framework
This would be the youngsters chance to create their own guide to what they care about online, and doing it within the respected and trusted confines of the BBC Radio 1 framework.
Headshift has gone on to work with the BBC on multiple projects.
