BBC Every Square Mile

Sector: Media and Publishing
Every square mile is a BBC initiative designed to preserve the natural history of an area by collecting stories from local people and plotting them on a map of the area.

Creating a 'People's History'
Headshift worked with BBC to create a prototype for the Every Square Mile project. The project centred on a pilot area covering Runnymede, Staines and Woking. The main goal of the project was to create a 'people's history' of the area. Preserving memory and contributing to the collective memory is a major theme in the project and people are encouraged to collect stories that are important to them.

Designing for irregular Internet users
Headshift worked with the BBC to establish core user requirements and to draw up some user personae, use cases and key user workflows. Once the initial requirements consulting had been completed Headshift planned the information architecture of the system. One of the most interesting challenges with designing a site like this is the fact that the main target audience are not regular Internet users. They are more familiar with library systems and traditional media. This meant that user testing was a constant part of the process.

Expanding the scope in phase two
The project is in beta and is continues to focus on the pilot area of Runnymede, Staines and Woking. The eventual plan is for the site to cover all of the UK and function as a national shared memory. Until then Headshift are working on phase two with the BBC to make the site as user friendly and intuitive as possible.
